How many caffeinated drinks do you drink a day while being pregnant?
Mommyluv asked:
I will drink a can of coke or have some plain tea every now and then but I’ve been trying to avoid coffee.
My OB-GYN said its okay to have up to 2 cups of a caffeinated drink daily…and he actually recommended drinking a coke if you haven’t felt much movement from the baby.

Due to my own coffee addiction, when i was pregnant i did a fair bit of research on this subject & from it i concluded that it was safe to have 2 caffinated drinks per day while pregnant. I also learned that large amounts of caffeine (more than 4 drinks) has possible negative effects on the fetus & increases your chance of miscarrying.

Most experts agree that moderation and
common sense are the keys for consuming
caffeinated items during pregnancy.
“Moderate” caffeine consumption is
approximately 300mg/day, which is similar to 3
cups of coffee. It is also important for pregnant
women to drink enough water, milk and juice.
These fluids should not be replaced with
caffeinated beverages.

I’ve had 2 cups of coffee a day since pregnant. The experts say you can have up to 3 cups of coffee which is the equivalent of 6 sodas. I also make sure I drink enough water to compensate for the dehydration effects of caffeine. That is most important b/c dehydration during pregnancy can be dangerous.

I only drink water, milk, and juice – all the time, even when I am not pregnant.

The studies give conflicting evidence. Some of them say that caffiene has a slight increased risk of miscarriage and low birth weight. (None of them say ADD). Some of them show no harm at all. The studies that do show harm, however, only show harm at more than 400 mg/day. Most normal (not grande Starbucks-sized) cups of coffee have 80-100 mg in them. So if you drink a couple per day, you’re ok.

3 pregnancies: Baby#1- I was very careful and drank caffeine free soda- one can a day. Son was born 5.8 pounds. Baby#2- I said forget about it and I drank 4 cans a day of regular soda- baby was almost 8 pounds. Baby#3– due May, 07- I drink 3 cans of regular soda but I also supplement those cans by drinking a lot of other liquids like Apple juice, OJ, yogurt drinks (I’m lactose intolerate- cannot drink milk but yougurt is ok) and water. My doc says it ok to drink 3 cans a day. My boys and I are extremely healthy, I am just addicted to the caffeine. When I try to give up on the caffeine, I get extreme migraines.

Keep your caffine consumption under 300mg of caffine. I would try doing an internet search to see if you can find out how much caffine is in what you are drinking daily.
Of course the best thing is to cut out caffine as much as possible. If you want to endulge a little, that’s fine…I have a can of pop every once in a while, just make sure you stay under 300mg of caffine when you do have some.
